Reaper Fishing Tips
By Joe Puccio
Of all the Reaper presentations there are two that I use most. I like the Esox Cobra Jig for throwing Reapers because it is an advanced swimmer head design and it has the best hook out there.
1. Cast & Retrieve horizontal swim presentation: (rig the reaper in line like a fish swims)
Throw the bait out and count it down to achieve the desired depth and crank it back with a pump and jerk action. Sometimes just a steady retrieve will do the job. If you rig the reaper back further on the hook, the Cobra Head will make the bait wobble side to side (deadly). If you rig it back too far the jig will actually turn the reaper over (experiment).
This presentation works great in shallow water, over or through weeds, wood or rocks. Great technique for fishing weed pockets or large rocks, crank and then let the jig fall into the pockets. Use your polarize glasses, this is a sight fishing technique.
2. Start & Stop Vertical swim presentation: (rig the reaper side ways like a fish belly up)
Throw the bait out and let it go all the way to the bottom. Watch your line back to the boat, it will tell you when your there. Hold your rod at 10:00 O-clock (important) and burn your reel about 6 turns (this will bring the bait rapidly off the bottom). Stop quickly and hold your rod at 10:00 O-clock and let the bait fall (glide) all the way back to the bottom. Repeat this pattern back to the boat.
Strikes almost always occur on the fall. Remember, a Muskie or Pike will inhale a jig, so all you will feel is a "tick" when the fish hits...so set hook on every tick you feel. The biggest fish in the system will only give you a little tick. This presentation is deadly on deep-weed edges, drops and deep humps.
